A new committee, joining SWC at UCLA for the first time for the 2010-2011 school year!
More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since 1981.
Currently 33 million people are living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.
Africa has over 14 million AIDS orphans.
Working in conjunction with various AIDS organizations at UCLA, this committee aims at increasing campus awareness and knowledge of HIV/AIDS and promotes safe sex practices through events such as World AIDS Day and RollAIDS.
The UCLA SWC Blood Drive has been in operation for over 10 years with the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center and is responsible for over 1700 donations yearly, providing to the needs of our local communities and hospitals. By donating through the SWC Blood Drive, your blood donation will go directly to the UCLA Medical Center and work towards saving people’s lives in the UCLA community.
The Blood Drive Committee runs blood drives during weeks 1 and 6 of each quarter, and saves the UCLA Medical Center an estimated $400,000 yearly. Our goal is to meet the complete blood donation needs of the UCLA Medical Center and associated hospitals. Got blood? Please donate at one of our quarterly blood drives, or better yet, email swcblooddrive@gmail.com to join our team, and gain great leadership experience while volunteering for a truly noble cause.
Our blood drive dates are posted on the calendar; click on the calendar tab above to view upcoming dates.
Remember to always donate directly to the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center. Outside organizations, such as the American Red Cross, will sell blood back to the UCLA Medical Center for $300-$450 depending on blood type. Blood donated directly to the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center (look for the logo) goes directly to the patients of the UCLA Healthcare System.
As the most popular annual event that SWC sponsors, the Run/Walk at UCLA is a 5K fundraiser that increases the widespread visibility and support for the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. Originally called The Children’s Walk for Life, this student-run event has been a phenomenal success throughout UCLA and the greater Los Angeles Community for the past eight years. The hospital’s Child Life/Child Development Program sponsors activities, movies, books, and games to provide children with holistic care, fun, and encouragement during their difficult stay at the hospital.

The Student Welfare Commission’s CPR & First Aid Program offers low-cost American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR, AED, and First Aid courses with a two year certification. Classes are open to the UCLA community as well as the public and typically costs $7 each for undergraduate students and $11 for everyone else. All of our classes take place on Fridays and Saturdays in Ackerman Union.

The SHA program has been a part of the University of California, Los Angeles experience since 1974 and is one of many organizations on campus that contributes to the increased quality, safety, and comfort of campus life. The SHA program works in conjunction with the Student Welfare Commission (SWC) and the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center to encourage and help students to develop healthy lifestyles and educate students on wellbeing.
The Student Health Advocates offer free, friendly, and convenient services including referrals, health information, health-related programming on campus and in the residential halls, and community health outreach programs. SHAs are trained to educate other students about various health issues including nutrition, substance abuse, fitness, sexual health, stress management, meditation, body image, and more. SHAs coordinate campus, all-hill, all-hall, and floor programs throughout the year to help UCLA students achieve a heightened awareness of their own health needs, to assume greater responsibility for their own health care, and to become involved in the planning and delivery of all aspects of health care.
Total Wellness, a division of UCLA’s Student Welfare Commission, is a non-profit, student-run health magazine that is dedicated to spreading awareness of and sharing knowledge on issues of student health and health care.
